8 Days Tanzania’s Serengeti and Katavi

Tours & Safaris Tanzania

Overview

As a Tanzanian safari itinerary with a difference, this 8-day tour opens with the grandeur of Serengeti National Park where you find yourself in the legendary Western Corridor, home to abundant wildlife all year and also the scene for the seasonal Great Wildebeest Migration. You can look forward to exploring the teeming plains from the comfort of Soroi Serengeti, where individual thatched suites offer stunning Serengeti views, even from the bathtubs. Morning and afternoon game drives are designed to catch wildlife on the move and you can also view the action from above on an optional hot-air balloon safari.

You then trade the grassy savannahs of the Serengeti in the north-east of Tanzania for those of Katavi National Park, tucked away in the little-visited west of the country. There is a great mix of wildlife in Katavi, including elephants and big cats, and one of your days here will be a full-day game drive out on the savannah, complete with a picnic lunch. Your accommodation is Mbali Mbali Katavi, set with sweeping views over the Katisunga Plains, one of the best game-viewing areas in the park.

A fly-in itinerary means easy and comfortable logistics, and much more time on safari. This is a journey with an emphasis on the wildlife experience, with morning and afternoon game drives led by expert guides. Back at camp you have a lovely candle-lit ambience to look forward to: drinks and stories around the fire; indulgent multi-course suppers; a table for two under the stars – this is a safari that will also appeal to those on a romantic journey.

Day 1-3: Overlooking The Serengeti

Your tour begins in Arusha – the gateway town for Tanzanian safaris – where you will be assisted onto a scheduled flight to the Seronera airstrip and a friendly transfer to camp where you check in for three nights. Soroi Serengeti enjoys sensational views from its position high on a plateau and you can sit down and enjoy them over a cold drink before meeting your hosts for lunch. There is plenty of time to explore this corner of the Serengeti, and your time here includes a full-day drive with a picnic lunch. Soroi sits in the Western Corridor of the national park, most famous for the huge concentrations of wildebeest that pass through in Migration season on their way to the perilous river crossings. Such is the weight of wildlife in the Serengeti that a safari here at any time of year is highly rewarding and especially good for predators.

Day 4-7: welcome to Katavi

A morning flight whisks you over the breadth of Tanzania and to Katavi National Park, the third largest in the country. Mbali Mbali Katavi, your destination for four nights, is well positioned in a game-rich area of the park; large herds of antelope are stalked by big cats while the wetlands are home to stately storks and great rafts of pelicans. Back at camp you have a well-shaded tented suite to look forward to, complete with a sofa on your private veranda to take in the view. There is a nice blend of the old – a 4-poster bed and wooden writing desk – with the new like battery recharging ports, a modern bathroom and cold filtered water.

Day 8: Farewell Tanzania!

After a leisurely breakfast at camp, you sit back on a transfer to the local airstrip – with game viewing on the way – and catch a scheduled flight back to Arusha. The flight time is around four hours so the lodge will provide you with a packed lunch for the journey. The tour ends with your arrival at Arusha.
